There’s no denying many don’t consider a Cornish holiday complete without a meal at one of his several restaurants. In Padstow St.Petrocs (a price down a notch from The Seafood) seems to get the price, quality and ambiance most right. For them that can’t afford the eye watering prices at the flagship Seafood restaurant, or get a table at St.Petroc’s or The Middle Street Cafe, his latest is on Newquay’s Fistral Beach (the home of west country surfing). To one side is the fish ‘n chips counter – using traditional beef dripping – with a few surprises, like grilled salmon in a sourdough baguette and a personal favourite of mine, deep fried halloumi (Greek sheep’s cheese) with chipotle relish in a sesame bun . On the other side of the restaurant Flavours from the Indian and the Far East serves spicier fare, including Goan chicken curry (a favourite of Rick’s) and Pad Thai noodles, with prawns and chicken. There’s takeaway or eat in – but you can’t book.
